This course is for people new to the world of VFX. No previous VFX experience or animation experienced is necessary. We’ll be breaking down each department and discipline in VFX. Where they came from. What they do, and How to use them in production.

This course is meant to give a broad understanding of each department and how they fit together in the structure of a VFX shot.

Whether you’re a new student to VFX, A youtube filmmaker, An experienced Agency producer, Or a director getting a better grasp on how to leverage VFX for your production. This course will have what you need to begin to work out the benefits and use cases for VFX in you next project.

Bilali Mack

Bilali Mack is a VFX Supervisor Based in NYC. Born in Accra, Ghana and based in Brooklyn Bilali has spent the better part of the last decade honing his craft at visual effects at studios such as Brickyard VFX, Smoke and Mirrors, MPC and Alkemy X.

Bilali has on-set supervised and created visual effects for commercials, tv, and film for a number of high profile clients such as Adidas, Google, BMW, Starz, HBO, and Focus Features as well as working with notable directors such as Mario Van Peebles, The Russo Brothers, Lance Acord, and Thomas Bezucha.

The Agenda

  • Rotoscoping - We’ll discuss what rotoscoping really is, the history and how to use it in your shots. I’ll also be breaking down some examples of hard and easy use cases for roto.

  • Tracking / Matchmove - What is tracking or matchmove? In this section we’ll be going over the history of camera tracking how and when you’ll need to track a VFX shot. Along with examples of what would make a shot easy or hard to track.

  • Keying - Everybody has heard of greenscreen. What is it really and why do we use it? We’ll go over where keying originated from, how we use it, and when it can become very challenging and expensive to try and use a greenscreen or bluescreen.

  • Simulation / FX - What are we talking about when we say a sim? Here we will go over what a VFX simulation is and how we can use them in our VFX shots. We’ll go over some use cases and examples of easy and difficult simulations.

  • CGI - CGI or Computer Generated Imagery. Learn what fall under the umbrella of CG and it’s history. We’ll go over how and where we use CG vs 2D VFX and what some examples are of Hard and Easy CGI in VFX.

  • Matte Paintings - We’ll be discussing matte paintings and their long history in filmmaking. We’ll also go over how and when to use them as well as simpler and more complex matte paintings techniques.

  • Compositing - What do we mean when we say Comp? How does compositing fit into the VFX pipeline and what is the history of compositing in filmmaking. How can we best utilize compositing and what are some examples of simple or complex compositing shots.
